The First 7 Seconds

You have 7 seconds to make a first impression. Are you making the biggest impact?

In a previous blog, we discussed how to make your Power Close more powerful, but are you losing your audience before the workshop even begins?  Many advisors start their workshop with a brief introduction of themselves, and this could be one of their biggest mistakes.  Make an impact on your audience with these first impression tips to start your workshop off the right way.

Skip the Pleasantries

If you only have 7 seconds to create a first impression, why use those seconds with a boring introduction? You will have an opportunity to introduce yourself and gain credibility later in your presentation so save the introduction for a little later.

Make a Real Connection

Think back to your earliest memories related to finance.  Did your parents bicker over money?  Did you lose a large sum during the recession? Could your grandparents retire on time? Think hard about these memories and develop your “why” story.  The more personal your story, the more universal it will feel.  This is a great way to make a connection with your audience.

No story? No problem!

If story telling is not in your wheelhouse, you can still make an exciting first impression by using engagement triggers to captivate your audience. These triggers help your learners realize that they are in the right place.  An example of these triggers could be, “Most people never take the time to educate themselves the way you have.”  This lets your audience know that you understand their reasoning for coming to your workshop – and that reason is because they would like to learn more about that topic you educate on.

Ask A Question

If you are still struggling with how to start your workshop, you can always ask your audience a question. “What keeps you up at night?”

“What made you sign up for this workshop?”

“Are you concerned about the cost of healthcare in the future?”

When you start with a question, your audience will be instantly engaged because the focus is on them.
